SINGLE GENDER

The single-gender camp experience provides children with an environment absent of the overt and subtle pressures at home or school.

At all-boys camps, boys interact with their counselors – men placed in the role of nurturers. The mostly male staff are trained to care for their campers’ physical and emotional needs, including dealing with homesickness, conduct issues, and inhibitions. Boys can just be boys without judgment; they tend not to care who is the best or who runs the fastest. The focus is on their friendships. They can be silly, sing, and dance without concern about being ‘cool’ or worrying about other social factors.

Meanwhile, at girls-only camps, female campers interact with women in positions of authority, who set the tone and establish what is expected of each and every girl at camp. Campers learn how a girl or woman can assume positions of power by observing how the camp directors, administrators and staff run day-to-day camp life. A single-gender camp is a valuable opportunity to provide girls with a healthy place for development — away from social media and the sometimes superficial sense of identity it fosters.

WILDERNESS ADVENTURE

Hayo-Went-Ha Camps are committed to wilderness adventure trips in all our summer programs. Camping teaches skills and values that campers can enjoy their entire lives. It fosters a tangible and tactile connection to nature that only comes from immersing oneself in it. Above all, camping is a tool to bring the cabin group together. Overcoming challenges as a group helps forge strong bonds of friendship. It allows each camper to realize how much stronger they are together than they are as individuals.

We design our trips that are appropriately challenging for each specific age group. Hayo-Went-Ha trips are physical, technical, and sometimes cerebral. Frequently the most memorable and character-forming trips are the ones that pose the most significant challenge.

TWO & FOUR WEEK SESSIONS

Kid’s schedules seem more packed than ever. Between sports and family vacations, carving out two or four weeks in the summer can be a real challenge. Hayo-Went-Ha Camps is committed to offering extended stay camping because we see a positive impact on children. Taking a long break from friends, family, social pressures, cellphones, and electronics creates an unmatched environment for personal growth.

The four-week programs become the only option as the campers move up in grade level. In addition to allowing for longer and more challenging trips, the longer stay gives campers the chance to form deeper friendships with their cabinmates.

Our two-week programs give kids a chance to experience long-term camping and all that Hayo-Went-Ha Camps has to offer. It's the perfect amount of time for a young camper to try all the camp activities and still fit in a short wilderness trip to boot.

NO PHONES

Today, more than any other time in history, we are reachable and plugged in to the larger world around us. Our phones and computers have become an extension of our bodies. We are bombarded with emails, texts, notifications and expected to respond immediately for fear of missing out.

At Hayo-Went-Ha Camps kids can unplug and tune their minds and bodies back into the real world around them. Even the most reluctant cord-cutting campers often cite the absence of their phone as one of their favorite things about camp.

Surrounded by nature, campers relish the opportunity to sing around a campfire, share a moonlit chat with a new friend, or (gasp) sit alone with their thoughts.
