Working at YMCA Hayo-Went-Ha Camps is a challenging but incredibly rewarding job.  Patience, maturity, and a desire to work with kids in a great outdoors is essential.  We expect our staff to be great role models and mentors for our campers.  A Hayo-Went-Ha Camps staff person’s most important job is to live the YMCA’s four core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility, as well as our motto “Each for all, all for each,” at all times.

Hayo-Went-Ha Camps place a great deal of emphasis on the relationships that develop between leader and camper, and among the campers themselves.  Staff is carefully chosen for their commitment to the growth of the camper, enthusiasm, experience, interpersonal skills, and their ability to engage, have fun and forge friendships!

HOW WE OPERATE

YMCA Hayo-Went-Ha Camps have over 200 combined years of camping tradition.  Our ratio of four campers per counselor gives our staff the opportunity to create close bonds with their campers.  Additionally, we strive to assign an international counselor to every cabin to broaden international understanding and increase cultural sensitivity.

Our wilderness adventure program offers campers an appropriate wilderness challenge for their age.  Staff are chosen for each trip based on their interest, experience, and qualifications.  Cabin groups consist of two staff and 8 campers and they venture to many state and national parks across Michigan and southern Ontario in Canada.  Staff will be trained in all aspects of our trip program during staff training.

At camp and on trips, safety is of the utmost importance.  Staff will be trained in wilderness first aid, lifeguarding, and CPR.  Adventure activities, including swimming, SCUBA, sailing, archery/riflery, and the ropes course, are all run by accomplished and additionally specialists.
