Pioneers (Formerly Frontiersmen)

The Pioneer Program will enjoy Polar Bear Swim, ride the zipline, challenge themselves with our six climbing routes on the climbing wall, create great arts and crafts projects, learn how to sail and canoe, enjoy a game of ultimate frisbee or soccer and make a LOT of new friends! Our staff focus on fun, safety, and creating a solid cabin group in the cabin.

The Trip: As Pioneers, campers delve further into YMCA Hayo-Went-Ha Camps’ wilderness adventure trips, alongside their two-week counterparts, the Pathfinders. They’ll spend three days at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, hiking up sandy dunes for breathtaking views and enjoying time on the shores of Lake Michigan. During this experience, your child will deepen their knowledge of backcountry living by spending two nights tent camping, assisting staff with cooking meals over a camp stove, and bonding with cabin mates. The adventure continues with a ferry ride to South Manitou Island, where campers will spend three days exploring the island’s iconic lighthouse, visiting migratory bird nesting grounds, and discovering historic shipwrecks—all while living in tents and embracing the natural beauty of Lake Michigan Island. Pioneer campers get to experience the best of what camp has to offer, creating unforgettable memories.
