Helmsmen campers embark on an unforgettable sailing and camp adventure that begins on the crystal-clear waters of Torch Lake and sets course for the wild beauty of Lake Superior. This program blends hands-on skill development, real expedition experience, and the full spectrum of classic camp traditions.

The program begins with several days of focused instruction on Torch Lake, where campers learn to handle sailboats, read wind and water conditions, and navigate with growing confidence. Once skills are in place, they join our experienced partners at All Hands Sailing to crew large sailboats on a 9-day  voyage across Western Lake Superior. Depending on weather and crew readiness, campers will set out across the open waters with a possible goal of reaching Grand Marais, MN, Black River Harbor, MI, or even Washington Harbor on Isle Royale. Campers can expect to perform night-sailing passages, sailing on silvery waters underneath the full expanse of the milky way. And, of course, there will always be time to visit favorite haunts in the Apostle Islands.

Campers should come to camp with some sailing experience, either through our programs at Torch Hayo-Went-Ha or through home sailing. This is a great program to build skills and transition from small-boat or lake sailing to larger water sailing.

When not underway, campers return to the vibrant energy of camp life—jumping into the lake for Polar Bear Swim, flying down the zip line, scaling climbing routes, paddling canoes, making art, and joining spirited games on the field.

Helmsmen is both a first step into the world of sailing and a classic summer camp experience—an expedition that builds skill, confidence, and lasting friendships on the water and at camp.
