The Navigator Program offers the ultimate sailing adventure, paired with fun and engaging in-camp activities. Campers dive into their time at camp with a refresher on essential skills, including nomenclature, rigging, and the fundamentals of becoming a skipper. During their time at camp, they’ll also enjoy various on-site activities while gaining confidence in the beautiful waters of Torch Lake.
Navigators spend at least two days focusing intensively on sailing, practicing on our larger scow and keelboat vessels. These sessions are designed to provide hands-on experience and a solid foundation in sailing techniques.
The highlight of the program is a thrilling 14-day voyage with All Hands Sailing, heading north from Bayfield, WI, toward Isle Royale. This is a learning expedition, not a pleasure cruise—campers will take on different crew roles aboard a larger sailing vessel, where they’ll be challenged to build their sailing skills and work as a team.
This trip is intended for campers who have prior experience in Hayo-Went-Ha sailing programs or who have large boat experience outside of camp. Campers should be well-versed in boat skills and need only a solid refresher to participate fully on the boat. Depending on group ability and weather, this trip will traverse Isle Royale and, if possible, the Canadian North Shore, with visits to places like the Slate Islands.
Passports Required: This trip will pass close to Canadian territory and may need to stop there in case of bad weather. All campers must bring passports.
The Navigator Program offers a unique blend of in-camp fun and a real sailing adventure, giving campers unforgettable experiences and valuable skills on the open water.
