Hayo-Went-Ha Camps is a technology-light program. This means that we may use the benefits of modern technology to play music for a group, project on a screen, or for our staff to communicate with each other. Many of our staff will carry radios, and we use GPS locators on expeditions to track and communicate with groups in the field. Administrators will have cell phones for the whole summer.
None of these things keep us from building the true connections that are possible face-to-face. We see this unique time at camp as a time to practice those face-to-face skills.
Campers who bring a phone to camp can derail that experience for themselves and those around them. Families can support our camp community by building the expectation early that this will be a time to take a break from their phones.
If you are concerned about being able to contact your camper while they are with us at camp, please see our policy on camper contact [link]. If your camper is bringing a phone because of the way they are traveling, they can turn it in to be held securely and returned upon their departure.
We strongly discourage any electronics that are entertainment-oriented. Devices that play music or display books can be distracting and distancing for other campers.
If you decide to send other electronics (such as a camera) with your camper, Hayo-Went-Ha Camps are not liable for anything lost, stolen, or damaged. There are no opportunities to charge or power electronics at camp.
