At YMCA Hayo-Went-Ha Camps, our primary goal will always be the safety and well-being of our campers and staff.
In keeping with recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, we no longer maintain a policy specifically addressing COVID-19 but have broadened our policy to include communicable diseases more broadly.
Illness at camp can be extremely disruptive to our program and an unnecessary danger to campers and their families. We rely on families to help us keep our camp community healthy by monitoring their campers’ health before camp and doing their best to prevent communicable illnesses from entering our camper population.
Illness Protocol
If a camper or staff member experiences symptoms consistent with respiratory illness (including but not limited to cough and/or nasal congestion) and has a fever (temp over 100.4 ºF), they will be isolated in the health center, and the camper’s parent or guardian will be notified.
Testing
We have the capacity in our health centers to test for both COVID-19 and strep throat. If they are experiencing related symptoms, your camper may be tested upon your request or if we have strong reason to believe a COVID or strep infection may be present in the camp community. Campers are never tested without caregiver permission.
Release from Isolation
- The individual can resume normal activities when, for at least 24 hours, both are true:
- Symptoms are getting better overall, and
- They have not had a fever (and are not using fever-reducing medication).
- When they return to their normal activities, we will take added precautions over the next 5 days if our Health Officers deem it necessary.
In our commitment to the health and protection of our families and staff, we will continue to monitor guidance from the CDC and other state health agencies. We recognize that recommendations and guidelines will change and commit to updating our programming and protocols accordingly. This document is dynamic and will be updated on an ongoing basis.
If you have any questions about this policy, please feel free to contact our Health Team or Front Office
If your camper is experiencing symptoms of illness before coming to camp, please contact us and consider holding them back from camp until symptoms resolve. We reserve the right to request that you test them for COVID-19 before bringing them to camp if warranted.
