The Islander Program offers campers an unforgettable adventure as they canoe and portage through the pristine Big Island Lake Wilderness in the heart of Hiawatha National Forest. This journey not only immerses campers in the stunning beauty of untouched wilderness but also challenges them physically and mentally. Paddling across tranquil lakes and navigating rugged portage trails, campers will carry both their personal gear and group equipment, rotating between shouldering canoes and portage packs. Along the way, they’ll build essential skills in teamwork, responsibility, and resilience.
The trip spans 4 days and 3 nights of camping under the stars, with each day presenting a new and exciting challenge. Some days will focus on longer portages—ranging from 1000 to 1800 feet—with shorter paddles, while others offer multiple short portages of 100 to 800 feet, balanced by extended time on the water. The variety keeps the adventure fresh and engaging, allowing campers to fully experience the unique demands of wilderness travel.
After conquering the lakes and trails of the Big Island Wilderness, campers return to camp for a final few days to reflect on their journey, bond with their cabin mates, and celebrate their achievements. The Islander Program is an empowering adventure where campers grow as individuals and strengthen their connections with nature and each other.
